City of Port Isabel Approves Historic
District Ordinances
After six years of presenting and recommending an ordinance for historic preservation for the City of Port Isabel, the City Commission passed ordinances No. 618 & 619 in August of last year.

Ordinance No. 618 provides for historic preservation in the City of Port Isabel including for the following: definitions, designation of historic districts and historic landmarks; appropriateness for new construction and for external alterations, reconstruction, restoration within the designated historic district. These and other provisions will help keep the historic ambiance of Port Isabel intact.

Ordinance No. 619 establishes the creation of the Downtown Historic District and adoption of Design Guidelines for new construction, alteration, rehabilitation, restoration and demolition of buildings and structures within the historic district.
The designated historic area is from South Shore Drive on the west, Houston Street on the north extending to the city limits, the city limits in Laguna Madre Bay on the east, and Hickman Avenue on the south extending to the city limits. The Department of Historic Preservation, the Historic Preservation Board and the City of Port Isabel should be applauded for their hard work and diligence in establishing these ordinances in order to guarantee the preservation of Port Isabel’s heritage while promoting economic and tourism development for the City.
